Cat Potty for Toilet
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR CAT TO USE THE TOILET
To put an end to the grains of litter lying around the house and the chore of collecting cat poop, why not educate your cat to use the toilet? This slightly eccentric idea is quite realistic, provided you have the right tools and arm yourself with patience and perseverance. Manual...
Who hasn't dreamed of their cat knowing how to use the toilet like us? A hygienic alternative to litter , toilets are also a satisfactory solution for cats who naturally feel the need to mask the odors of their droppings and urine. With the toilet water, the smells are covered as if he had buried them under a mound of sawdust. With a little practice, Minou can go to the bathroom like you ... here's how!
1. Take a pee training kit on the toilet,
like the Litter Kwitter, and remove all litter boxes in the house. If your cat has an alternative that is already known or more accessible, he will necessarily opt for it.
2. Ideally, it is easier for your cat to already have his litter box near the toilet.
Some cat owners have testified that they are more successful when they first train their cat to use the toilet room, although this step is not mandatory.
3. Help your cat to familiarize himself with his kit by using it first on the ground,
as if it were a classic litter box. Place it next to the bowl and fill it with litter . Do not hesitate to place a little dirty litter there at the beginning to make him understand that this is his new box! Encourage him to go into it, and offer him a reward when he enters it the first few times, as well as when he uses it; this is the technique of positive reinforcement . Ignore the failures, do not punish him at the risk of making the experience stressful: then it will be much more difficult to obtain a favorable outcome because your cat will associate the toilet with the punishment.
Always keep the bathroom door open. If he does not have access to his litter box, your cat will go elsewhere. Let him get used to his new “bin” for a few days (usually a week) before moving on to the next step.
- Tip N ° 1: train your cat in this new “tank” when he usually goes to defecate. Often this is when he wakes up, after eating or after a game session.
- Tip 2: Clean the toilet kit regularly so that your cat has a pleasant experience every time they use it!
4. Once Minou is used to the ground kit,
we attack the training on the toilet bowl! Place the first ring (the red one in the case of the Litter Kwitter) on the bowl and fill it with litter. As in step 3, show your cat that its bin has moved by placing it in it. Continue to reward him when he succeeds in using it. If he does not dare to go over it and defecate, it is because he is not ready. Go back to the previous step.
- Tip # 3: Most cats have enough mobility to get on the toilet. If yours doesn't, place a small stool or a stack of books to help him climb.
5. After a few weeks of success without an accident,
your cat is now ready to take the next step (the yellow or “amber” ring with a small hole if using the Litter Kwitter). Place the new ring on the bowl with the litter. Your cat will now have to learn how to do it in a bin with a hole. Wait for the right moment to place your cat on the bowl as in the previous steps. Its front legs should rest on the bowl and its back legs on the ring, on either side of the hole.
At first, it is possible that:
- Your cat will be intrigued by the hole and observe what's in it: this is normal, and you shouldn't discourage him from doing this. He needs to be reassured.
- Your cat refuses to use the toilet: he may be hesitant to go upstairs, or he may do so elsewhere in the house. This is a sign that you are going too fast and that he is not ready. Go back to the previous step.
- Your cat is frightened by "slugs" and other water noises, as well as by the flushing. It will be much easier for your cat to get used to it if she feels safe (with you) at these times. Maybe it would be a good idea to wait until he is in another room before flushing the toilet first. Cats who are used to coming to the bathroom with you will benefit greatly here!
- Your cat still has accidents and misfires, or only manages to pee but not poo: again, no punishment or annoyance from you. Clean up without saying anything and only encourage success. This stage is especially important so that your cat learns to take the correct position for urinating and defecating. It is normal for this to take a long time: would you get mad at your baby for using the potty for the first time?
Do not neglect this step, which must be long enough to be understood. The time required varies from cat to cat. Little by little, your animal will naturally bring its rear legs closer to the front legs to do its business and have enough balance to make it in the hole. Wait until he is comfortable enough and has no accident for at least two weeks before moving on to the next step.
6. When the time is right, move on to the next step.
Your cat will have to learn to use the toilet with a bigger hole and less space to position its hind legs. Place it again at the correct time of day on the toilet with the front legs on the bowl and the front legs on the ring, on either side of the hole. If he is curious, your cat will surely put his head in the hole, and sometimes even drink the water in the bowl! If your toilet is cleaned regularly and the toilet has been flushed beforehand, it is simply tap water that is neither dirty nor dangerous for your cat. If he's going to sniff or drink it, don't punish him (you risk creating stress associated with the toilet bowl). It's safe anyway, and if the water was dirty he wouldn't drink it.
When he has successfully used the green ring long enough, start reducing the amount of litter gradually, until no more litter is used at all. It is your cat who will impose his rhythm, and not you, even if the initiative will come from you when your cat has shown sufficient ease. If despite the absence of litter your cat continues to scratch the bowl as if trying to bury its needs, this is not a sign that it is missing the litter box. It is a reflex that helps the cat to feel good by covering what is recoverable, and to deposit its soothing pheromones (a form of territorial marking)
7. After several days / weeks of success with the green ring without litter,
you can remove it and do a test without the kit!
Some additional advice from our behaviorist:
Make sure your cat is old enough (minimum 3 months) to have the mobility and balance to climb onto the toilet bowl.
Make sure he is sufficiently accustomed to his litter box: a cat that has never used a litter box (for example, an animal that always does in nature) must first be educated with a bin or a toilet house classic . Likewise, if your cat has uncleanliness problems, it will first be necessary to resolve this question with a behaviorist before considering training in the toilet.
If you have several cats and several litter boxes, you will need to equip several toilets in the house with a kit. If you only have one bowl, your cats will first have to get used to using the same bowl for several weeks. You will then have to be very patient and attentive to your cats, who may have difficulty sharing the same bin (uncleanliness problems). It will then be necessary to cancel the experiment and to give them again access to several bins. There is no point in stressing them out and creating tension at home over territory issues. If, on the other hand, the common ferry step is taken, you can make the transition to the Litter Kwitter. Each cat is different in their reactions and learning rates. It will then be necessary to go at the pace of the slowest cat.
